Connecting Earth-based Spirituality, Science and Cosmology, with classic notions of Transcendence.

What is “GeoCosMysticism?

“GeoCosMystic” is the word I invented to answer the question, “what is your religion?” or “what do you believe”?

Geo = Earth. I’m an earthling. A creature formed of materials swirled together and steeped to human and eventually, over hundreds of generations, emerging to be “me”. I’m an earthling at the moment, and of the moment – born in the American euphoria of 1951. Bred in the second half of the 20th century, as the ravages of western colonialism remained veiled by our collective national amnesia. Alive now, in the early decades of century 21. Recognizing lately that the neon signals of planetary wreckage have been lit for my entire lifetime.  Of Earth, a delicate blend of the minerals conspiring into the shape of a 72-year-old male of primarily European descent. I am of Earth, hosting in my cells the entire racial, cultural, intellectual, artistic and spiritual conglomerate that is my inheritance.

Cos – Cosmos. I exist within, and contain within myself, a universe that is dynamic, ever expanding, and ever revealing wonders that inform and expand my identity. This cosmos, made visible and knowable through technologies only publicly available in recent decades, invites me to reflect on everything with an eye cast beyond the “visible heavens”. My earthlingness exists within a cosmological context. Spatial and temporal infinities materialized as “me”. My mind is continually “blown”, even as it is concentrated more tightly on matters of day to day living.

Mystic – Mystic. I accept the welcoming Myst! Mystery, mysterious, mysticism. Mystics have always been among us, and are helping to navigate the wild passages of our times. These are the ones who possess unique insights, perceptions and ways of knowing. Mystics are often targets. They “see” things, “hear” voices and “feel” presences that “normal” people don’t. Sometimes these insights are threatening to those who are no so gifted. Often such “mystics” are ostracized or punished by those who wish to protect “normal” perceptual senses. Today, scientists who study the human brain, consciousness and psychology, recognize that each of us possess a range of perceptions, and the range of perception is different for each of us. We know that some of us, much like other creatures, get significant information from our environment through subtle sensitivities like smell and taste. We also know that the information we receive through our eyes and ears is vastly incomplete … there is a lot more going on here than is evident to those senses! Our senses, in fact, filter information to align with what is “normal”, sensory data we have learned to expect from our environment. Today, learning to perceive BEYOND what is immediately seen or heard is part of the maturation process of our human species.

There are surely many facets, nooks and crannies to be explored in this blog, and I look forward to conversations my posts may stimulate! Thanks for visiting!
